Digicel Samoan Barbarians take Heineken Hottest 7's in the World 2009 title in Darwin A DRAMATIC length of the field try from Timoteo Ioseu saw the Digicel Samoan Barbarians take out an absorbing final of the Heineken Hottest Sevens in Darwin on Sunday night. With less than a minute left in the final and his team down 10-15 against the top-seeded South Sea Drifters from Fiji, Ioseu gathered a ball in his in-goal area and headed down field. He then beat the first line of the Drifters defence and the bamboozled sevens legend Waisale Serevi with a Benji Marshall style step and scored under the posts. The Samoa Barbarians picked up up $20,000 of the $60,000 in prizemoney on offer and are now bouyantr about their the rest of the IRB World Sevens series which reconvenes in Wellington in a fortnight's time. The Samoans started the final well and combined pace with their normal physicality to knock the Fijians off their game. But the Drifters worked their way back into the game and were leading 15-10 before Iosua's heroics at the death where he stepped his way through the Fijian defence and bamboozled sevens great Waisale Serevi with a Benji Marshall style step. |
